Icelandic National Day (Þjóðhátíðardagurinn) is a holiday in Iceland, celebrated as the day that The Republic of Iceland (Lýðveldið Ísland) was formed in 1944, becoming independent from the Danish Monarchy. The date of 17 June was chosen because it is the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a major figure of Icelandic culture and the leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement. Today, Icelanders celebrate this holiday on a national scale, with parades including flagbearers, brass bands, and riders on Icelandic horses. After the parades, speeches are given, including one from the Fjallkonan or Woman of the Mountain, clad in the Skautbúningur costume. (Wikipedia).
