INL PURPOSES
The Icelandic National League of North America was formed during 1918 and held its founding convention on March 25, 1919 in Winnipeg, and later on May 30, 1930, it was incorporated under the Companies Act with the Federal Government. Since the very beginning, it has played a leading role in most public spirited and cultural activities among the Icelandic people in Canada and the United States of America.
The main purposes of the Icelandic National League are threefold:1. To work towards the ideal of good Canadian and American citizenship among the people of Icelandic background and descent.
2. To support and maintain an appreciation of the Icelandic language, literature and culture among the Icelandic people on this continent.
3. To promote understanding, cooperation and cultural exchange between the people of Iceland and those of Icelandic descent in North America.
EXTENT AND INFLUENCE: It is in the spirit of this threefold purpose that the many and varied activities of the league have been carried on for over half a century. Its work has been carried on through its several chapters in many Icelandic communities as well as by the central executive committee.
Very close liaison and cooperation has been maintained with the Icelandic International League in Reykjavík and Akureyri, as well as with the Government of Iceland throughout the years in cultural as well as in other matters, such as, group tours from time to time, and participation in various projects of a mutual nature. The ties that bind are firm, positive, constructive and worthwhile, and to all appearances will remain so for a long time to come.
