BRÚIN CHAPTER OF SELKIRK

The following scholarships are offered by the INL Brúin Chapter of Selkirk, MB

The Laurence Johnson and Bernice & Stefan Helgason bursaries are awarded to two deserving students of Icelandic descent graduating from the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School and are for $200 each.  The Bruin Chapter changes the name every 2 years to honour those members who have passed on.

GIMLI CHAPTER, INL

The Gimli Chapter of the Icelandic National League of North America is offering an annual scholarship of $500.00 to any graduate student of the Gimli High School. The student must register in any course offered in the Icelandic Studies at the University of Manitoba. Final selection will be determined on grade point average attained and on community involvement.

ICELANDIC CANADIAN CLUB OF B.C.

The Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia has established a fund to provide financial assistance to students who are residents of B.C. and who are beginning or continuing a program of post secondary education in B.C. Five Memorial Scholarships are available to assist students of Icelandic descent. In addition, any resident of B.C. who intends to pursue or is currently pursuing an educational program which includes the study of Icelandic culture, language, literature, genealogy and/or traditions is eligible to apply for the Open Scholarship.

ICELANDIC CANADIAN CLUB OF TORONTO

Scholarship: One award of $500 to students of Icelandic descent, taking post secondary education of any kind. Contact the current President of the I.C.C.T.

Icelandic Language Camp The I.C.C.T. also offers $500 for a child between 8 and 13 years old to attend the Icelandic Language and Heritage Camp in Gimli, Manitoba. Families of children applying must be club members.

Wilhelm Kristjanson Memorial Scholarship - $500

Requirements:
1. Complete post high school academic results.
2. Qualities of leadership and community service.
3. Brief history of your Icelandic background, including the names of your Amma and Afi.
4. Letter of application and a copy of official transcript, which includes marks for 2004/2005 school year.
5. Letter of reference from teacher or community leader.
6. Submit this information on or before July 8, 2005.

Icelandic Festival of Manitoba Writing Contest

The Icelandic Festival of Manitoba invites you to submit poetry (three entries per person limit) and/or a short story (one entry per person). Prize money will be awarded and successful entries will be publlshed in the festival booklet. Categories are as follows:

- held during the Icelandic Festival, at the Gimli Early Middle Years School, 3rd Avenue, Gimli - includes paintings, sketches, pottery, glass work, carvings and photographic prints.

Soren Tergeson Memorial Award for Creativity and Innovation - annual award of $100 established by the Tergeson family - to be given to an artist in the Art Show that has exhibited promising talent. The main emphasis is on creativity and experimental.

GOVERNMENT OF ICELAND SCHOLARSHIP

North American students of Icelandic descent, studying language and literature, are invited to apply for a Scholarship to study Icelandic language and literature at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik for the 2008 - 2009 term. The scholarship is approximately $13,500.00 CAD and covers tuition, room and board.

Deadline for submissions of all application material to the INL office is Monday, March 17, 2008.

NORÐURLJÓS, ICELANDIC SOCIETY OF EDMONTON

NORÐURLJÓS Bursaries for Post-Secondary Education: These scholarship funds are available for Norðurljós members and their immediate family. The payments are made directly to the educational facility that the applicant will attend, with criteria for the institute set by Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, which governs the use of casino proceeds.

Rules for Eligibility:

  • The bursary is offered to three persons or less, up to $500 each for attendance in a course of study at any recognized educational institute, anywhere in the world.
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Icelandic descent.
  • If an applicant is living at his/her parents’ or guardians’ home while attending the educational facility, the parent/guardian must be a Nordurljos member in good standing.
  • If the applicant lives away from the family or guardian home then the applicant must be a Nordurljos member in good standing.
  • Applicant must provide proof of success in their last school attended, with a letter of reference from teachers or others who know the student, and should attest to positive involvement in courses of study, extracurricular activities related to school, and leadership roles in school and community. In the event of competition for this bursary, the Executive Board of Nordurljos must choose students based upon qualities beyond scholastic achievement, such as demonstrated leadership or community service.
  • The post-secondary institute must send a letter indicating that the bursary is being applied toward tuition, textbooks, and/or supplies on behalf of the student who has been approved by the Icelandic Society of Edmonton. A cheque drawn on the Edmonton Icelandic Society Account will be provided to the educational institute.
  • Applications should be in the hands of the Executive Board as soon as possible, as awards are made at the Annual General Meeting during the last week of October.
    The deadline is August 31st of the current year.
