Lt. Doug Thorlakson - CFB Edmonton

Giant C17 Galaxy transport aircraft fly in all types of military equipment including helicopters as seen above.

Dust is everywhere and gets into everything, so it is hard to keep [equipment] clean.

Wind storms can generate a wall of blowing sand as high as 1,000 feet. Fortunately it doesn't happen very often.

Lt. Doug Thorlakson is seen here with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper who flew in for a visit and to thank troops for their efforts.

Humanitarian aid is also one of the basic reasons for Canadian troops in Afghanistan. Seen here is a Canadian soldier overseeing the distribution of blankets and other essentials to local Afghans in need. Other military personnel are not far away standing guard over the situation.
