Ströndin Internet Radio ......... An Icelandic Christmas Folk Tale.........Evening on the farm -

Helga meets the Huldufólk on Christmas Eve.

This is the tale of a young Icelandic woman named Helga. She was the unloved daughter of a rich Icelandic farmer and his wife. Helga's sister was very spoiled and much loved by her parents.

This scene depicts Helga giving an unknown little girl some food for her bowl. Her loving kindness was later rewarded.

The lovely sketches for this folk tale and the Baðstofa drama were created by artist Pat Peacock.

The Huldufólk become visible and enjoy visiting with each other on Christmas Eve.

As Helga finishes milking the cows in the barn, she meets a Huldufólk woman carrying a bundle of clothes.

As a reward for Helga's
kindness to the elfin child,
and for being a virtuous girl,
she is given a beautiful
wedding gown, complete
with a wondrous golden belt.

Helga is told that only she
can wear the costume on
her special wedding day.

.

Helga eventually moved to
Skálhólt where her life was
much happier and where she
eventually got married to a
Bishop.

All the good things in life
came to her as a result of
being kind to the less
fortunate and respectful of
the Huldufólk.
