The truth is that if you are reading this, you probably do!  There are two programs open to North Americans...

SNORRI PROGRAM is a  unique opportunity for young people (18-28) of Icelandic origin living in Canada and the United States of America, to discover their roots in a six-week summer program in Iceland in June and July,  including spending time with your relatives (we find them for you!), learning about many things Icelandic in Reykjavik, celebrating Icelandic Independence Day June 17 and then touring Iceland with the other members of the group.

SNORRI PLUS is for those 30 and over  (no limit to age as long as you are healthy), and is open to those of Icelandic descent as well as those with a passion for Iceland..  This program is 2 weeks long at the end of August and includes meeting relatives, as well as someone in your line of work or interest, learning about Iceland in Reykjavik, going to Culture Night (think ´Nuit Blanche´) and also travelling around the country.

Come out and learn more, meet people who have been on the programs, see their beautiful pictures!  Application deadlines are in January.

    • Landmark Center in St. Paul, Minnesota

The Icelandic Hekla Club in Minnesota will be partnering with the St. Paul Landmark Center in which Iceland be the featured country in the St. Paul Landmark series, Urban Expedition, on February 25, 2018, from 1 - 3 p.m at the Landmark Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.  This is the 14th year of this series, but the first (and likely only time) Iceland will be highlighted.  The purpose is to provide authentic cultural experiences that include music, dance, crafts and traditions from different destination countries.  Bulgaria, Japan and Bolivia are the other highlighted countries for 2018.

From the Landmark staff, we have learned that this event is aimed at children and families as a way to visit Iceland without leaving St. Paul and is free and open to the public,  It is our opportunity to showcase Iceland in a variety of participatory and interactive ways.  Depending upon the weather, the expectations are for some 300 - 650 attendees.

In addition to live Icelandic animals, crafts, food, cultural displays, etc. there will be two hours worth of performance programming. We ask you to mark your calendars to attend this event if you are in the Twin Cities in late February (maybe you'll stay on after the Super Bowl ), and if you have a way in which you'd like to participate as a vendor, performer or as a means of informing about Iceland, all are welcome to join the fun, at no charge.

Please feel free to contact me for further information.

Registration for the fifth Iceland Writers Retreat (11-15 April, 2018) is going very well. Remember that  anyone is welcome to attend the Iceland Writers Retreat, but spots fill on a first come, first served basis. You can register via our website.

We're pleased to announce that once again our generous alumni and friends have contributed enough to be able to offer at least two Iceland Writers Retreat Alumni Awards to attend our event next April. You can find out all the details on who is eligible and how to applyhere. Please remember that competition is fierce for these awards and review all of our rules and guidelines carefully. You can apply until October 31

We will also be running a writing competition again. We'll open that at the beginning of October and details will be available at that time.

We will be offering a new, unique tour during the IWR next April: The Geology, Ecology, and Literary Inspiration trip begins near geological wonders in the Reykjanes peninsula, including the spectacular Lake Kleifarvatn (made famous in Arnaldur Indriðason’s novel The Draining Lake) and the Krýsuvík geothermal area. We’ll also have a reading at the Strandakirkja Church, a visit to the Sólheimar Eco Village, and a stop at the Laugarvatn Fontana Spa to sample some delicious rye bread baked in the hot geothermal ground.

All IWR participants are able to choose between three all-day, literary-themed tours. Details of the Literary Golden Circle, and Literary Borgarfjörður, are already on our website and the third tour's description will be there soon. All tours are led by a local author and include a stop and reading at Gljúfrasteinn, the former home of Nobel Prize winning author Halldór Laxness.

IWR will be on the road again this autumn. Co-Founder Eliza Reid will be speaking in New York (September 30) and Toronto (mid-November) as part of the Taste of Iceland festivals. Everyone is welcome to attend these free talks. We'll keep you posted on more events as they are finalized.  All the best,
    Eliza & Erica
