Icelandic Music

Iceland has a long history of music that’s rich with different genres and styles. While it’s beginnings with choral “Middle Age” music lasted many centuries, over the 1900s, the Icelandic music scene crescendoed near the turn of the millennium with talent such as Björk, Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men, and Kaleo gaining notoriety in North America and Europe with English tracks as well as some Icelandic ones.

Daði Freyr gained a strong following for their song “Think About Things” which was entered for 2020’s Eurovision (which has since been cancelled)

Today, Icelandic music continues to gain more and more international interest. Festivals like Iceland Airwaves continue to give local artists a larger stage, while Iceland continue to represent at Eurovision, and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir just recently made history winning Oscars and Golden Globes for her score in Joker, as well as a Grammy and Primetime Emmy for her work on Chernobyl.

There is no doubt that Iceland’s music scene will continue to flourish in the coming years.
